SUBJECT: 2020 U.S. – UK Science and Technology Cooperation Award Winners
We are pleased to announce the 2020 U.S. – UK Science and Technology (S&T) Cooperation award
winners. The award nominations submitted are a testament to the broad range of bilateral scientific
and technical cooperation between our two defense organizations. This year we awarded two team
awards and three individual awards:
- The Coalition Assured Autonomous Re-supply (CAAR) team is a recipient of the Team
Achievement Award for their efforts in developing and demonstrating state-of-the-art
autonomous logistics capabilities that improved joint understanding of multilateral capability
integration. In addition, their efforts assisted the U.S. and British Armies understand and
develop potential tactics, techniques and procedures together in representative battlefield
environments.- The Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Enabled Biobattery team is a recipient of the Team
Achievement Award for their efforts in establishing an agile, rapid and adaptable mechanism to
accelerate S&T development for the warfighter. Through the determination of a diverse team
of experts, this new mechanism is advancing the most disruptive of technology at an accelerated
speed.- Dr. Randal J. Schoepp is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition for his
sustained and outstanding contribution to the U.S. and UK development of filovirus detection
and diagnostic tools over a period of 15 years.- Dr. Themistoklis Andreadis is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of
his contribution to cooperation over the last 30 years in the areas of Directed Energy, including
projects on counter improvised explosive devices, counter missile, counter unmanned aircraft
systems, small boat stopping, and large vessel stopping.We also want to commend two teams for their significant achievements:
- The Coordinated Ionospheric Reconstruction Cubesat Experiment (CIRCE) team for
demonstrating exceptional initiative, diligent cooperation, resourcefulness and unwavering
dedication to innovation in the design, development and testing of a paired, space weather
satellite system.- The Bioinspired Adapted Techniques for Sensing, Actuation and Vocalization using
Vibroacoustics (BATSAVVI) team for establishing a bilateral collaborative program between the
U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and the UK’s defense scientists to address research challenges in small
unmanned vehicle navigation and communication, and for successfully demonstrating novel
bioinspired acoustic approaches to obstacle detection and avoidance within this program.Thank you all for working to support collaboration between our nations, and encouraging the
